Hi, my name is Michelle and I’m a MTG noob!
I started playing Magic The Gathering in summer of this year after being introduced to the game by my boyfriend Hans. He had been playing since nineties, a few years after the game first launched. I had always been aware of the ‘card game with the cool art’ but never played it or knew many people that did.
Earlier this year I actually decided I wanted to start collecting Pokémon cards as a new hobby but seeing how passionate Hans was about MTG and how much more I liked the art, I’d much rather learn more about Magic. I’m so glad I did! I love everything about it; The artwork on the cards is amazing and has many different sets with influences from ancient times, science fiction, fairy tales and other fandoms and nerdy stuff. All the while following the original lore whilst also going back and forth in other directions and story lines. The game itself is so much more complex than I first thought too. There are multiple game formats, so many different creatures and spells, lots and lots of strategies, win conditions, game tactics, add-on games and expansions. And the fact that they’re collectible cards makes this even more exciting to me. I mean, who doesn’t love opening a pack of cards, hoping to find a pretty foily one or a much sought after card? 🤩
Surrounding all this goodness is a massive community of people from all over the world that play Magic and collect cards. From weekly local meetups to dedicated YouTube channels to big international conferences (MagicCons) and tournaments, which makes this trading card game even more fun.
Plus I absolutely love playing this as a couple to spend quality time together with Hans :)
Having said all that, the complexity and comprehensiveness of it all makes for a very steep learning curve and is one of the reason I started this blog. There is a lot of information out there and so much to learn. A lot of it goes very in depth, very quickly. So if you’re a MTG noob like me and want to start with the basics (and need things ELI5, explained like I’m 5 years old, sometimes 😋), this is the blog for you. I’m still learning and I will document what I learn, as well as reports of events I attend and products I try out, to hopefully help other MTG noobs along way!
Nice to meet you! (Say hi if you like :))
